Bird of the Month - May 2016
One of the most beautiful of the leaf warbler family, the delightful Wood Warbler is passing through Mallorca at the present time.
They are a dazzling lemon-yellow in colour which makes them really stand out from all the other similar species which are also on migration from Africa on their way to breed further north.
In the UK the largest populations are in Wales where they make their dome-shaped nest near the ground. They feed on insects and spiders and have a lovely piercing song which helps to identify them.
Sadly they do not breed here but good numbers can be seen in all types of trees as they search for insects, never keeping still for more than a few seconds.
