Bird of the Month - April 2016
There are no woodpeckers in Mallorca sadly but the Wryneck is the next best thing to it.
As you can see, they are beautifully camouflaged and are very hard to see against tree bark where they are near impossible to spot.
April is the best month to see them so now is your chance to capture them as they sit out in the open advertising for a mate by letting out a shrill and repetitive "tie, tie, tie".
They can be seen all year as there is a small resident population but they are joined this month by migrant birds which are just arriving now.
The name comes from their defense mechanism, when they are threatened they twist their neck round at a very acute angle and they also hiss to appear like a snake. Clever that.
